BACK TO LIFE

That day I was reading a Newspaper. Suddenly I felt something unusual and awkward. My eyes looked funny as the eyelids drooped, the voice developed a nasal twang and I found it very difficult to drink and eat anything.

Initially the diagnosis was difficult to come by. It was thought that common cold could have caused the nasal twang. Many different tests were conducted. I was sent to an E.N.T surgeon. He detected growth in the nose and suggested operation. Even after the surgery the problem persisted.

Then I went to Eye specialist who gave me some eye drops which did not work. There one Doctor suggested me that it is not an eye problem but it is a Neuro problem. The Doctor gave me note to Neuro Physician.

I was scared to go out of the house and stopped going to the office. My sons were young and my wife, a housewife. Running from doctor to doctor and spending money, I was terribly scared about future of my family members.

I was fortunate to be sent to Bombay Hospital by one of my friends Dr Tandel who suggested an Electromyograph. That conclusively established the diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis. We never had heard name of the disease. I got an appointment of Dr Satish Khadilkar, the leading Neurophysician from Bombay Hospital who not only prescribed medicines but explained the nature of disease and assured of a good recovery. His words of assurance gave me lot of confidence. The medicine also brought in its effect and I was almost back to my normal self. I resumed my duties and problems started resolving slowly. In Dr Khadilkar, I not only got a good doctor but a good well-wisher and a counselor as well. He would never mind my telephoning him at any time of the day. He was always available for advice. There were no restrictions on food including non-veg.

Earlier it was indeed a nightmarish experience. Unable to eat, I started losing weight very fast. From 72 kg it got reduced to mere 56 kg.

I came to know the address of Myasthenia Gravis Foundation, India Chapter. We were occasionally called for the meeting and receive regular letters from them. The brand of Pyridostigmine Bromide I used to take suddenly went into short supply in 1999.
